Judo

Translated as the “gentle way” or “way of suppleness and pliability” the word Judo describes a martial art that trains in the use of controlled surrender to defend oneself from attack, rather than meeting force with force.

The Judo practitioner cultivates an acute sense of dynamic energy and balance, and uses opponents’ own weight and strength against them. When an assailant pushes, the Judo practitioner pulls’ and when an attacker pulls, the practitioner pushes. The motto “softness triumph over hardness, weakness over strength” well describes the aesthetic and practical ideal of Judo.
